Assessment

The assessment will take approximately one hour and will include parent discussion, structured clinical observation of your child and standardised assessments (if appropriate). This will help determine your child’s strengths and areas of difficulty and help shape goals for treatment if this is recommended. A questionnaire is distributed to parents and school to identify sensory motor history and learning strengths and weaknesses.

Following assessment, a report will be forwarded to you with recommendations. If therapy is required, goal-setting will be done collaboratively with the family and these goals will be regularly reviewed.

Individual Therapy  (Clinic, school/childcare & home based)

Therapy sessions are booked at 45 minutes sessions however depending on the child’s needs and the families requirements these times may vary.

Therapy is individualised and designed to meet your child’s and family’s specific needs. Therapy sessions primarily occurs within the clinic however some sessions can be conducted at home or at the child’s preschool / childcare / school setting if required. Stepping Stones OT therapist’s utilise traditional OT models of practice in combination with DIR Floortime and Sensory Processing approaches. The therapists make occupational therapy sessions fun, motivating and an opportunity to build on your child’s capacities, skills and self-confidence.

Clinic based therapy is often preferred due to the large variety of therapeutic equipment that is available at the clinic.

Group Therapy

Various groups are held throughout the year to target specific needs. The school readiness groups are held on a weekly basis for 8 weeks and last 1 hour. The school holiday handwriting groups occur twice a week for 8-10 sessions depending on the need. Throughout this time children engage in a variety of fun and motivating activities to target specific areas of need. Children are required to attend a brief screening assessment prior to all groups. This assists to determine the child’s suitability in the group program as well as to set individual goals for each child.

Current Groups:

Getting Ready School Group

  • Handwriting Group - Years 1-2
  • Handwriting Group - Years 3-5
  • Alert Program (Attention & Concentration group)

Other groups will be added to this program throughout the year.

Groups can also be provided in the school/preschool setting if a number of children are identified to have difficulties.
